The University of Regina's women's basketball team jumped out to a first-half lead that reached as many as 24 points and held off a late push by Lethbridge as the Cougars took a 78-70 road win over the Pronghorns on Friday night in Lethbridge.
The Cougars (4-7) drilled eight three-pointers in the first two quarters, helping them open up a 29-17 lead after one and a 51-33 advantage at the break. But Lethbridge hung around, as the Pronghorns got the lead back down to 12 heading into the fourth and then went on a 12-2 run capped by a Kacie Bosch bucket that made the score 72-70 for the Cougars with just under two minutes to go.
Regina was able to pull away from there, though, as that Bosch basket was the last time Lethbridge scored and the Cougars scored on their next two possessions to push the lead back up to six.
Faith Reid hit a pair of late free throws to ice the win for the U of R.
Reid hit four triples and finished with a game-high 22 points for the Cougars, who jump back into a playoff spot with the victory.
Zoe Hartmann,
Avery Pearce, and
Madeleine Tell all hit a pair of three-pointers while
Michaela Kleisinger collected 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists.
Asnate Fomina led Lethbridge (5-6) with 21 points.
The two teams will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night (5:00 MT/6:00 SK) in Lethbridge.
