Greishe Clerjuste and
Matt Barnard led the University of Regina's men's basketball team on Friday as the Cougars locked up a Canada West playoff berth with a 90-58 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Clerjuste and Barnard both hit five triples as they accounted for the majority of the U of R's 16 three-pointers in the win. Clerjuste tied his season high and led all players with 26 points, while Barnard eclipsed the 20-point mark for the first time in a U of R uniform and finished with 21.
Josiah Thomas added three three-pointers and scored 11 points for the Cougars, while
Brayden Kuski hit a pair from the outside and
Shaquille Harris had the other. Friday marked just the third time the Cougars have hit 16 three-pointers in a regular season game since they joined Canada West in 2001.
Tyrell Laing was UNBC's only double-digit scorer, finishing with 22 points.
The Cougars are now assured of participating in their fifth consecutive postseason, a string that started back in 2016. While it's known that they'll be in a play-in game, the opponent and location of that game isn't yet clear. The Cougars would host that play-in game at the CKHS on Feb. 14 if they finish as a No. 8 seed or higher, but would have to travel if they end up as a No. 9 seed or lower.
UNBC (4-13) is still very much in contention for the final Canada West playoff berth. The Timberwolves entered Friday's game one win up on a trio of teams for that last spot, but will now need to reel in Brandon as the Bobcats have the head-to-head tiebreaker over UNBC and defeated Trinity Western on Friday for their fourth win of the campaign.
Regina and UNBC will meet again on Saturday night (8:00) at the CKHS.
