Regina jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first period however the University of Alberta men's hockey team stormed back scoring six straight goals to defeat the Cougars 6-3 on Friday evening at The Co-operators Centre.
Noah Philp, Lucas Nickles, Sawyer Lange, Chad Butcher, Grayson Pawlenchuk and Cole Sanford each had a goal for the Golden Bears.
Ben Duperreault,
Brennan Riddle and
Turner Ripplinger scored for the Cougars.
Matt Berlin made seven saves for Alberta in the win as they improve to 20-5-0 on the season while
Brandon Holtby stopped 37 shots for Regina who fall to 8-14-3.
Duperreault scored 59 seconds into the first period giving the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. Ripplinger brought the puck into the Alberta zone and then passed the puck over to Duperreault who proceeded to fire a quick shot into the back of the net. Riddle extended lead for Regina to 2-0 midway through the first period.
Philp responded for Alberta though scoring just over a minute later and the Golden Bears were fired up. Alberta proceeded to score two more times in the first period and three times in the second to take a 6-2 lead over the Cougars.
Ripplinger scored a power-play goal for Regina with five seconds left in the second period to make it a 6-3 game.
Neither team was able to score in a physical third period in which Regina took three penalties and Alberta received two.
Regina and Alberta will be back at The Co-operators Centre tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. for an afternoon rematch.
