Madison Landry poured in 30 points to lead the UNBC Timberwolves to a 73-67 road win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Landry also pulled down 10 rebounds to notch one of two double-doubles for UNBC. Emma vanBruinessen had the other, scoring 15 points and a team-high 12 rebounds to help the Timberwolves improve their Canada West record to 8-9 with the win.
It was a back-and-forth affair for much of the night with eight lead changes in the first three quarters, but UNBC took the lead for good with 11 consecutive points at the end of the third quarter and the first minute of the fourth. That turned what had been a three-point Regina lead into an eight-point UNBC advantage, and while the Cougars got back to within three on two different occasions in the fourth they weren't able to draw any closer to the visitors.
Macaela Crone tied her season high with 21 points for the Cougars, while
Alexi Rowden led all players with 14 rebounds.
Michaela Kleisinger added 17 points for Regina, which also moves to 8-9 on the season.
UNBC, which shot just a shade under 41% in the win, played almost exclusively with a six-player rotation. The Cougars didn't have much more themselves as an injury to
Faith Reid in the first half left them with only eight players available.
Both teams are on the brink of clinching a Canada West postseason berth. The winner of Saturday night's rematch between Regina and UNBC will officially book a spot in a play-in game, while both teams will clinch if Mount Royal suffers another loss at Winnipeg on Saturday.
Saturday's game will also tip off at 6:00 at the CKHS.
NOTES: UNBC was playing in just its second game in Regina since joining Canada West in 2012, with the only other meeting between the two teams in the Queen City coming back during the 2012-13 season.
