Jaycee Magwood scored the game's first goal, but the University of Regina's women's hockey team suffered a 3-1 road defeat to Alberta on Friday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
Magwood opened the scoring five minutes into the game after stripping an Alberta player of the puck right in front of the Pandas net. She buried her 11th of the season to give the Cougars the lead, a goal which also gives the forward 99 points in her five-year career at the U of R.
The Cougars took that 1-0 lead into the first intermission and held onto it until midway through the second when Alberta's Kennedy Ganser tied it up. Brooklyn Tews provided the rest of the offence for the Pandas, scoring what would turn out to be the game-winning goal with three minutes to go in the second and adding an insurance marker in the third.
Kirsten Chamberlin made 12 saves for Alberta as the Pandas now have a three-point lead over second-place Calgary atop the Canada West standings.
Jane Kish stopped 28 of Alberta's 31 shots for the Cougars, who remain in fourth place in the conference standings. Regina has 35 points with three games to go in the regular season, while fifth-place Mount Royal has 34 points and sixth-place UBC has 31.
The Cougars and the Pandas will meet again on Saturday afternoon (2:00 MT) in Edmonton. Following that game, the Cougars will close out the conference schedule next weekend with a home-and-home against Saskatchewan.
