Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars' season comes to a close at Mount Royal

Breanne Trotter scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal midway through the first period as Mount Royal defeated the University of Regina's women's hockey team 2-0 in Game 2 of the Canada West quarterfinals, giving MRU the series sweep at Flames Community Arena.

The game-winning goal came with 11:47 left in the first period. Regina attempted to clear the puck but Trotter narrowly kept it in the zone and proceeded to take a slap shot from the point finding the back of the net.

Cougars head coach Sarah Hodges was proud of the way her team played this weekend.

"They worked hard and played well enough to win, but at the end of the day a few bounces didn't go our way," Hodges said.

Regina came out skating hard in the first period. Thirty seconds in Chelsea Hallson stripped the puck from a Mount Royal defender and the other defender proceeded to fall over, giving Hallson a clear breakaway. Hallson attempted a backhand move but was stopped by Kaitlyn Ross. Midway through the period Mount Royal took a 1-0 lead with the goal from Trotter.

The second period was a back-and-forth affair as Regina went from having a power play to killing two penalties.

Throughout the third period Regina's offence continued to attack Mount Royal, getting eight shots on net. Regina pulled Jane Kish for the extra attacker with 2:57 left to play and Mount Royal capitalized 25 seconds later as Morgan Ramsay scored, extending their lead to 2-0.

Ross stopped 24 shots for Mount Royal to claim her second straight shutout while Kish made 21 saves in the loss.

Mount Royal will move onto the Canada West semifinals next weekend, while Regina will begin to look towards next year as the team loses fifth-year players Jaycee Magwood, Tamara McVannel, and Kish as well as graduating fourth-year player Shaelyn Vallotton.
