University of Regina women's hockey players
Jaycee Magwood,
Tamara McVannel, and
Paige Hubbard were all honoured by Canada West on Wednesday morning as the conference released its all-star and all-rookie teams.
Magwood and McVannel were both named second-team all-stars while Hubbard earned all-rookie honours for the Cougars.
The second-team all-star nod is the third of Magwood's career as the fifth-year forward also earned second-team honours in both 2016 and 2017. Magwood, the U of R's captain, scored 11 goals and 11 assists and finished tied for fifth in Canada West this year with 22 points. She closes out her U SPORTS career with 101 points, becoming just the third player in Cougar history to hit the triple-digit mark in that category.
"Jaycee had another strong season in Canada West," Cougars head coach
Sarah Hodges said. "She is an elite goal scorer and the ultimate competitor. She's an offensive threat every time she steps on the ice and her competitiveness helped lead our team to the successes we had in the second half."
McVannel suited up for all 28 games for the fifth consecutive season, tying
Nikki Watters-Matthes for the school's all-time lead in games played and becoming the only player in program history to play all five years without missing a single game. McVannel was third among Canada West's defenders in points this year, scoring three goals and adding nine assists to collect 12 points. She finishes her career with 54 points, a total which ranks second all-time to only Joell Fiddler among U of R blueliners.
"Tamara has an incredible work ethic and leads our team by example, day in and day out," Hodges said. "She is a highly skilled player who sees the ice well. She was able to create offence for us with great decisions on the breakout and while quarterbacking our power play."
In her first season with the Cougars after coming to the U of R from the Westman Wildcats program, Hubbard notched five goals and three assists for eight points while playing in all 28 Canada West games. She becomes the first U of R player to earn conference all-rookie honours since Magwood burst onto the scene in 2016.
"Paige was able to step into our league and make an impact right away," Hodges said. "She is a tenacious checker who creates a lot of her offence by creating turnovers and simply outworking her opponent in front of the net."
