Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars unable to overcome slow start in loss to UFV

The University of Regina's women's basketball team fell down 28-15 after the opening quarter on Saturday night and never recovered, losing 74-65 on the road to Fraser Valley in what was the final Canada West game of the season for both teams.

The loss will send the Cougars into the Canada West postseason as the No. 10 seed and sets up a play-in game on the road against No. 7-seeded Victoria next weekend.

While the Cougars fell behind early, they battled back to make a game of it. They trailed UFV by nine at the half, then went on an 8-0 run after halftime to make it a one-possession game in the third.

But Fraser Valley responded with a quick 8-0 run of its own to restore the double-digit lead, and the closest the Cougars came after that was when a Madeleine Tell bucket brought them to within seven with a minute to go.

Deanna Tuchscherer led UFV with a game-high 20 points with Taylor Claggett adding 17 points and 13 rebounds. UFV finishes the Canada West schedule with a 16-4 record and will head into the postseason as the conference's No. 5 seed.

Tell tied her career high with 15 points for the Cougars, while Michaela Kleisinger finished with 14 points and Macaela Crone scored 12.

The winner of next weekend's play-in game between the Cougars and Victoria will advance to one of two four-team pods hosted by Calgary and Saskatchewan - the conference's two top seeds. The four play-in winners are reseeded prior to the quarterfinals.
