Paige Hubbard scored with just 40 seconds left in regulation to send it to overtime and
Jaycee Magwood scored in the fourth round of the shootout as the University of Regina's women's hockey team took a 3-2 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday night in Saskatoon.
Merissa Zerr's goal had the Cougars up 1-0 through 40 minutes before Saskatchewan scored twice in the back half of the third to take a 2-1 lead. But the Cougars struck with the net empty on a nice effort by Hubbard, who had a wraparound and a rebound stopped before jamming one home for her fifth of the season.
Neither team scored in overtime and both goalies -
Jane Kish for Regina and Jessica Vance for Saskatchewan - stood strong through the first three rounds of the shootout. Kish stopped the fourth U of S shooter as well, which set the stage for Magwood who snapped a shot five-hole to seal the road win for the Cougars.
Besides scoring the shootout winner, Magwood also assisted on Hubbard's game-tying goal to notch her 100th career point. She joins Brandy West and Erin Tady as the only players in U of R history to hit that milestone.
The Cougars went into Saturday's game already knowing they were locked into the No. 5 seed in the Canada West postseason, as Mount Royal clinched home-ice advantage with a win over UBC earlier in the day. The Cougars will head to Mount Royal for a best-of-three conference quarterfinal series on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday if a deciding contest is needed. All games are set for a 2:30 PM (MT) start time.
