MODO Hockey announced Friday that recently graduated University of Regina women's hockey forward
Jaycee Magwood has signed a professional contract with the team.
Magwood wrapped up a sensational five-year career with the Cougars this past spring that saw her become one of just three players in program history to score at least 100 points. She was a three-time recipient of Canada West second-team all-star honours, was named to the CIS All-Rookie Team following her first year with the Cougars, and finished her time at the U of R with 48 goals and 53 assists for a total of 101 points.
Based in Örnsköldsvik, MODO is one of 10 teams in the Svenska damhockeyligan (SDHL), which is the top level of women's hockey in Sweden. Magwood is likely to run into some familiar names next season, as seven former Canada West players were in the SDHL last year.
"I'm super excited to get to Sweden and play for MODO," Magwood said. "I have heard a lot of great things about the program and the SDHL and I already know (former Manitoba blueliner) Erica Rieder who is planning on going back for a second year with MODO."
Magwood becomes the first Cougar player to move on to the professional ranks since goaltender Toni Ross suited up for the Calgary Inferno of the Canadian Women's Hockey League during the 2017-18 campaign.
