• The Rams return to action for the first time since their thrilling 34-21 victory over Calgary, which was the program's first-ever win over a team ranked No. 1 in the U SPORTS poll.
• Regina broke into the U SPORTS Top Ten at No. 9 on the Tuesday following the big win over the Dinos. Despite having last weekend off, the Rams rose two more spots to No. 7 in this week's poll thanks largely to losses by Guelph and McMaster.
• UBC comes into Week 3 searching for its first win of the season. The Thunderbirds lost 44-19 to Alberta on the road in Week 1 and suffered a 43-15 home setback to Saskatchewan in Week 2.
MAKING HISTORY
Heading into the Week 2 game against Calgary, the Rams had faced the current No. 1-ranked team in the nation five times in their history with losses in all five of those games. That streak ended courtesy of the huge win over the Dinos, which also goes down as the first victory of Rams interim head coach
Mark McConkey's career.
BALL HAWK
Second-year DB
Gowrishan Aravinthan, the Rams' starter at field corner, was rewarded with Canada West Defensive Player of the Week honours after becoming the first U of R player in nearly three years to collect two interceptions in a single game. He returned his first-quarter pick 58 yards (the eighth longest in U of R history) to set up the Rams' first touchdown of the game. With a minute and a half left, Aravinthan wrestled the ball away from a Calgary receiver in the end zone to give him his second pick and end any hope of a late Calgary comeback.
INTERIOR RENOVATION
Widely regarded as one of the top position coaches in the country, offensive line coach
Sheldon Neald painted what might have been his finest masterpiece in the Calgary win. Three injuries on the line meant the Rams started first-year players at all three interior positions. OL
Apete Tuiloma slid over from right guard to start at centre, a position he hadn't played since Grade 9 with North Battleford Comprehensive's junior varsity team. OL
Connor Taylor dressed for his second career U SPORTS game and started at right guard. At left guard was OL
Sean Usselman, who was not only playing his first career U SPORTS game but also his first official game of 12-man football (he played nine-man ball in high school with the Melfort Comets). Despite this makeshift line against the No. 1 team in the nation, the Rams were able to free up the running back tandem of
Kyle Borsa and
Christian Katende for a total of 138 yards - including 100 to Borsa alone - while conceding just one early sack to Calgary.
SACK ATTACK
The Rams lead the nation in average sacks per game with nine through their first two contests of the season. They piled up six in Week 1, then followed that up with three more against Calgary pivot Josiah Joseph. LB
Josh White leads the way with two sacks while LB
Ryder Varga, LB
Cody Peters, DL
Tanner Schmekel, LB
Chopper Hippe, DB
Jackson Sombach, and DL
Anthony Bennett all have one.
Jaxon Ford and
Michael Clow also shared a sack in the Manitoba game.
TFL KING
LB
Josh White is not only the team's sack leader, but also has 4.5 tackles for loss this season and - despite the shortened season - is on pace to break the U of R single-season record of 10.5 set during the 2011 season by both Logan Brooks and current Ottawa Redblacks defensive lineman Stefan Charles. White is Canada West's outright leader in both sacks and TFLs and also has a forced fumble this season.
TWO TO MIMBS
SB
D'Sean Mimbs had only two catches for 13 yards in the Calgary win, which at first glance might not seem like a ton after his 96 receiving yards in Week 1 were the third highest in history by a Rams player in his first career Canada West game. But both of those completions to Mimbs were for touchdowns. The first major not only gave the Rams the lead early in the second quarter - and they never trailed after that - but also gave Mimbs his first Canada West touchdown. His second touchdown also came in the second quarter and put the Rams up 24-10 at halftime. Mimbs now has seven catches for a team-leading 109 yards this season and (so far) is the only Rams player with multiple touchdown receptions.
"WE'RE FROM MOOSE JAW, WE'RE A GRITTY GROUP"
QB
Sawyer Buettner's interview with sideline reporter Daniella Ponticelli just after his one-yard TD plunge blew up when the Rams shared the video on Twitter after the game. The original tweet from the @reginarams account has been seen over 225,000 times on the social platform. The Pardon My Take podcast, which boasts nearly 650,000 followers on Twitter, also shared the video and named Buettner its #FootballGuy of the Week.
STUSEK CHASES 1000
Now the Rams' most experienced offensive player in terms of games started, third-year slotback
Bennett Stusek sits just 12 yards short of 1000 for his career. He looks to become the 20th player in school history to hit that mark, but only three of those players (Jason Clermont, Chris Getzlaf, and Jordan Sisco) had more receiving yards through their first two seasons than the 918 that Stusek came into 2021 with.
