Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Vibert scores hat trick as Cougars rout Wesmen 4-0

The University of Regina's women's soccer team defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Sunday afternoon 4-0.

Kyra Vibert scored a hat trick to lead the way for the Cougars. Kyra moves into sole possession of third place on the Cougars all time goal scoring list. With the win, the Cougars are now two points behind the Huskies in the East Division, setting up a high stakes matchup next weekend.

"It was very enjoyable soccer to watch," said Cougars interim co-head coach Astrid Baecker. "A proud coach moment to see this team of players have such offensive success. We spent some time after yesterday's game identifying the positives that we could build off of to prep for today's game. From the back to the front we stayed true to our identity, our principles and our behaviors within our system."

Thirteen minutes into the game, Grace Miller centered a ball that was deflected by the Wesmen keeper. The ball landed right on the foot of Vibert and she wasted no time getting her fifth goal of the season. Miller got a goal of her own when she scored on a strike from just outside of the 18-yard box. Regina dominated possession in the first half, sending 13 shots towards the net and generating four corner kicks.

In the second half, Vibert tacked on two more goals. Sierra Kolodziej sent the ball down the field and Kyra put a well-placed shot from 20 yards out right over the Wesmen keeper for her second of the game. Her second goal of the half was a hard shot that zoomed past the keeper into the top corner of the net.

The Regina defense limited Winnipeg's chances as Allyson Ford only made one save for her fourth clean sheet of the season. Wesmen keeper Taryn Raabe made a whopping 13 saves in the loss.

"It was a total team win and every player contributed to our result today and results this weekend. Our first six point weekend this season at an important time – very happy at the position this puts us in! What an opportunity ahead of us versus the Huskies!"

Regina will head home to face the Huskies on Friday night at 7pm. They will then travel to Saskatoon to face them on Sunday. These games are critical for the two teams as it will decide who wins the East Division. The Wesmen will have their own home-and-home series next weekend against the Manitoba Bisons. The Bisons are still within reach of second place in the division.
