Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Late goal gives Saskatchewan 3-2 win over Cougars

Kennedy Brown's individual effort late in the third period gave the University of Saskatchewan Huskies a 3-2 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Canada West women's hockey game at The Co-operators Centre.

With the score tied up at 2-2 and six minutes left in regulation, Brown took a pass in the neutral zone, drove wide and jammed in a goal from the side of the net to score what would stand as the game-winning goal.

Kate Ball and Kara Kondrat also scored for Saskatchewan, while Camryn Drever stopped 32 shots to secure the win for the Huskies.

Regina's goals came courtesy of rookie Makena Kushniruk and captain Ireland Sorestad.

The Huskies opened the scoring five minutes in on a wrist shot by Ball from just inside the top of the right circle. They extended the lead to 2-0 late in the first period when Sophie Lalor's long flip out of the zone ended up on the stick of Kondrat, who fended off a Regina defender on a partial breakaway and scored her first of the year.

Kushniruk's goal came three minutes into the second as she followed up a Lilla Carpenter-Boesch shot and netted the first Canada West goal of her career. That made the score 2-1, and the Cougars tied it up less than two minutes into the third when Sorestad knocked home a rebound following a Jordan Kulbida one-timer on the power play.

Saskatchewan was 0-for-7 on the power play, while the Cougars scored once on their four opportunities and outshot the Huskies by a 34-22 margin.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night (7:00) in Saskatoon.
