The University of Regina's women's soccer team's season ended on Friday night with a 5-0 loss to UBC in a Canada West quarterfinal match at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver.
Danielle Steer scored twice for UBC with singles by Sophie Damian, Jade Taylor-Ryan, and Aislin Phillips. Emily Moore secured the shutout for the Thunderbirds as they advance to the Canada West Final Four.
The Cougars weren't without their chances, as they had four corner kicks during the match and had a fine opportunity to take the lead in the early going after a nice through ball from
Taylor Bubnick sprung
Peyton Enns down the right side of the ptich. Moore made one of her two saves off that Enns chance to keep the match scoreless.
Damian got UBC on the board in the 20th minute and Steer made it a two-goal lead 15 minutes later with her first strike of the contest. Steer's next goal was the backbreaker, coming in added time and giving the Thunderbirds a 3-0 lead at the break.
Taylor-Ryan and Phillips capped the scoring with goals in the 87th and 88th minutes for UBC.
"There were opportunities that were there," Cougars interim co-head coach
Astrid Baecker said. "We worked hard on the wing and delivered some good balls in, but just weren't able to connect."
The Cougars will now work on building towards next season. They fielded an exceptionally young lineup against defending U SPORTS champion UBC, with eight of their 11 starters in their first two seasons of eligibility.
"You can't help but take a step back and look at what we accomplished this season and I wish every one of these girls could see through our eyes and how proud we are of them," Baecker said. "This team just does not quit, and we've seen that on so many different levels this season."
This year's squad leaves its mark in the record book after collecting a 7-4-1 record during conference play. Only the 2012 edition of the Cougars had more wins as they collected eight that year, and the team's total of five road wins is the most ever registered in program history.
