The University of Regina men's hockey team fell to the Alberta Golden Bears by a score of 6-1 on Friday night in Canada West conference action in Edmonton.
Brennan Riddle came up with the lone goal for the Cougars, scoring from
Tanner Campbell and
Jayden Davis at the 3:00 mark of the second period. Alberta managed to get two goals past
Brandon Holtby in each period, three of which came on the man advantage. Holtby finished with 25 saves and Alberta led the shooting 31-29.
Despite a strong forecheck from Regina in the opening minutes, Clayton Kirichenko's power play goal assisted by Dawson Davidson and Nolan Volcan gave Alberta a 1-0 lead to open the scoring. Alberta extended their lead just 1:42 later with a Grayson Pawlenchuk goal assisted by Ethan Sakowich and Ryan Hughes.
Alberta killed three Regina powerplays in the first seven minutes of the middle frame and proceeded to score a power play goal of their own to go up 3-0. Jared Freadrich earned Alberta's third goal from Josh Prokop and Eric Florchuk. The Cougars' only goal was scored by Riddle from Campbell and Davis on a sharp top-shelf shot with three minutes left in the second. Alberta quickly answered with Matt Fonteyne's goal assisted by Dylan Plouffe before the second intermission.
Alberta punched in two more scores with Davidson's goal from Kirichenko and Florchuk and Prokop's power play goal from Gary Haden and Plouffe in the final frame.
The Cougars and Golden Bears will finish their weekend series tomorrow night in Edmonton.
