Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Second-period outburst gives Cougars 3-2 win over Manitoba

The University of Regina's men's hockey team defeated the Manitoba Bisons in a comeback 3-2 victory on Friday night in a Canada West game at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.

Regina's Tanner Nagel, Brennan Riddle and Bryce Platt all scored in the second period for the Cougars after the Bisons jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead. Cougars goalie Brandon Holtby stopped 37 of 39 Bisons shots to register his second win of the season.

"After being down two in the first period, I thought we fought back hard in the second," Cougars head coach Todd Johnson said. "We blocked some key shots and Holtby made some key saves, and that was the difference."

Brett Davis' goal from Liam Schioler and Mitchell Dyck and Dylan Thiessen's goal from Noah Basarab gave the Bisons a two-goal cushion by the midway point of the first period.

But the Cougars answered in a big way in the middle frame, starting when Nagel deflected home a Riddle shot from the point a minute into the period. Riddle himself then tied up the game later in the second on a wonderful individual effort which saw him take a pass in the neutral zone, drive wide around the Manitoba defender, then tuck in a backhand past Bisons goalie Jeremy Link.

Platt's scored his game-winning goal just two minutes after Riddle tied up the game. Tanner Nagel fired a low shot on Link, and Platt picked the rebound out of midair to put the Cougars in the lead for good.

Regina and Manitoba will finish their weekend series at 3:00 PM at The Co-Operators Centre.

NOTES: Manitoba had a 39-36 advantage in shots during the game … neither team scored on the man advantage as the Bisons were 0-for-5 and the Cougars were 0-for-4.
