Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Belmore scores 28 to lead Cougars to weekend sweep of Bisons

The University of Regina's women's basketball team defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons 77-62 on Saturday night in Winnipeg.

First-year wing Jade Belmore dominated the game, scoring a game-high 28 points on 12-of-19 shooting. She also grabbed 11 rebounds to secure the double-double and lead the Cougars to their second victory of the season. Manitoba fourth-year guard Deidre Bartlett scored a team-high 14 points in the loss.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with the Bisons responding every time the Cougars scored. The Cougars led the entire quarter and by four points on three different occasions but the Bisons never let them get farther than that. Jade Belmore hit a layup with time expiring to give the Cougars an 18-15 lead after one.

The second quarter was when the Cougars started to pull away, going on a 15-6 run over the full 10 minutes. They led 33-21 going into the halftime break.

The Cougars got out to a 20 point lead in the third quarter but the Bisons fought back to keep the gap at 14 points heading into the fourth. Jade Belmore scored 10 points in the frame to give the Cougars a 57-43 lead heading into the final quarter.

While the Bisons played well in the fourth quarter, the lead the Cougars put up in the second quarter proved to be insurmountable as they fell to 0-4 on the season. The Cougars held a 20-19 point advantage in the fourth to move to 2-4 after three weeks of play.

Kaitlyn Tonita scored 11 points for the Cougars, who also got 10 points from Faith Reid and nine from Cara Misskey in the victory.

Bisons Taylor Randall and Emerson Martin each scored 12 points in the loss. They also got nine points and seven assists from guard Lauren Bartlett.

Both teams are on bye next weekend before resuming Canada West regular season play on November 26th.  The Cougars will head home to host the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and the Bisons will host the Brandon Bobcats following the break.
