The University of Regina men's hockey team defeated the Trinity Western Spartans by a score of 6-3 on Saturday night in Canada West conference action in Langley, B.C.
The puck was shared well amongst the Cougars with six different skaters finding the back of the net and five players finishing with two points. Regina goalie
Curtis Meger picked up his first win of the year, making 32 saves. The Cougars scored multiple goals on the power play for the first time since their season opener on Oct. 15 and were 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
"Our power play was clicking, which was nice to see," Cougars head coach
Todd Johnson said. "I thought we played pretty well for the first two periods. Have to give the guys credit, we came out with the two points."
Ben Duperreault,
Turner Ripplinger, and
Riley Krane added on to their ten combined points from the previous night with Duperreault's power play goal in the opening frame. Ripplinger added a man-advantage goal of his own in the second, deflecting a shot from
Mike Eskra.
Brennan Riddle put Regina up 3-0 in the middle frame after a takeaway from
Tanner Sidaway at center ice and
Jackson Doucet doing a nice job handling a high pass before dishing the puck to Riddle. The Spartans then scored their first 35 seconds later on a goal by Michael Spafford but just 29 seconds after that, Eskra sent a stretch pass to
Conner Chaulk who fed
Tanner Nagel on a 2-on-1 for the Cougars' fourth goal.
Bryce Platt scored in the opening minute of the third after intercepting the puck deep in the Spartans end to put Regina up 5-1. Trinity Western then scored back-to-back goals from Aidan Steinke and Kylor Wall to shrink the Cougars' lead to 5-3, but Chaulk's top-shelf snipe midway through the third restored gave the visitors a three-goal cushion.
The Cougars will be back at The Co-operators Centre next weekend to face the Calgary Dinos for the first two times this season. The teams will meet on Friday night (7:00) and Saturday afternoon (3:00).
NOTES: Shots were 49-35 for Regina.
