• The Rams were eliminated from the playoffs last week after their one-point loss at Alberta combined with Calgary's blowout win over UBC.
• The two teams met back in Week 1 in Winnipeg. The Rams led 16-0 at one point in the first half, but the Bisons ended up winning 21-17 in a tight game that was a one-possession contest for the final 23 minutes.
• Manitoba comes in with a playoff berth locked up. The Bisons would host a home playoff game if they win on Saturday, but would likely finish in third place with a loss to the Rams.
LAST WEEK
The Rams still remained mathematically alive in the Canada West postseason race for about an hour following their one-point loss to Alberta, but Calgary's blowout win over UBC ended any chance of Regina sneaking into the playoffs at 2-4. The Rams did need a win by Calgary to stay alive, but not by more than 25 points – and the Dinos laid a 39-point drubbing on UBC with their own playoff hopes on the line.
FIFTH-YEAR DAY
The Rams will honour their five fifth-year players prior to kickoff, including TE/OL
Cameron Cross, TE
Colton Hippe, SB
Kyler Mosley, LB
Cody Peters, and LB
Travis Semenok. The Rams will also acknowledge three graduating fourth-year players as LB
Jacob Laboccetta, DL
Matt Moore, and OL
Derek Walde will all finish up their U SPORTS careers.
MIMBS MAGIC
SB
D'Sean Mimbs broke the school record for most touchdown receptions by a player in his first season with the Rams last week at Alberta when he caught his fifth of the year to break the old record of four (shared by Jason Clermont and Ryan Anderson). Mimbs had a pair of touchdown catches in the Week 2 win over Calgary and has collected one in all three games since.
PILING UP TFLs
DL
Anthony Bennett and LB
Josh White are both tied for fifth in Canada West with 5.5 tackles for loss this season. White, the team leader with three sacks, has knocked opposing offences back 36 yards with his tackles for loss while Bennett has 20 yards credited on his TFLs. LB
Ryder Varga, the U of R's runaway leader with 38.5 tackles, is third on the squad with four tackles for loss.
CLOSE CALLS
Last week's one-point loss at Alberta was the Rams' third loss of the season by four or fewer points. While the Rams are 1-4 on the season, their points for/against differential is just -4 as their biggest setback of the season was the 11-point loss at Saskatchewan two weeks ago.
ALDO'S RECORD
K
Aldo Galvan set a University of Regina record with five made field goals last week at Alberta, breaking the old record of four that was originally set by Perri Scarcelli and later matched by Chris Bodnar, Andrew Fabian, and Galvan himself (twice). Galvan has been near-perfect from close range this season, going 8-for-9 on field goals inside 40 yards.
PLAYING SPOILER
Just like in 2019, the Rams (unfortunately) go into the final game of the season at home against Manitoba out of the playoffs but looking to play the role of spoiler. The Rams delivered a 47-14 thumping over the playoff-bound Bisons in that game at Leibel Field, and will look for a similar result this year against a Manitoba team that's already clinched a postseason berth.
AT STAKE FOR MANITOBA
For the Bisons, it's pretty simple. A win for them lands them second place in the Canada West standings and a home game. A loss likely puts them into third place and on the road for the conference semifinals, though they could also land in second place with a loss if Calgary (at Saskatchewan) and UBC (against Alberta) both win.
