Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars sweep weekend series against Huskies

The University of Regina's men's basketball team defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 82-74 on Saturday night in Saskatoon.

Fifth-year guard Benjamin Hillis scored a game-high 25 points for the second consecutive night to lead the Cougars to a weekend sweep of the Huskies. Regina players Brayden Kuski and Matt Barnard scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, to contribute to the victory. Saskatchewan guard Marquavian Stephens scored a team-high 23 points in the loss.

The Huskies started the game strong, jumping out to an 8-3 lead in the opening minutes. While the Cougars kept the game close, they shot 2-of-12 from three, missing several open looks. Saskatchewan shot the ball well to open the game, shooting 8-of-15 and 4-of-7 from three to lead 21-14 after one.

The second quarter was evenly matched as the both team scored 17 points apiece. The Cougars improved from behind the three point line, shooting 4-of-10 from there in the second. Regina guard Josiah Thomas hit two three's and scored eight points to lead the team in scoring in the frame. The Huskies carried a seven point lead into halftime, up 38-31.

The third quarter was almost an exact repeat of the second as both teams once again scored 17 points each. Third-year guard Tyrese Potoma scored 7 point for the Huskies in the quarter. Saskatoon held a seven point lead at the end of the first, second and third quarters of the game. They led 55-48 heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was an entirely different story, however. The Cougars turned on the jets and started pouring in baskets. Hillis was on fire, scoring 17 points on 4-of-5 shooting including three triples. Matt Barnard added 11 points of his own as the Cougars dropped 34 points in the fourth. Stephens scored nine points for the Huskies but it was not enough. The Cougars shot 9-of-13 as a team to come back and win in the final quarter.

Thomas scored 14 points to contribute to the Cougars victory. Forwards Majok Madol and Matt Barnard had three blocks each to shut down the Huskies down low.

Potoma was second in scoring for the Huskies with 15 points. Fourth-year forward Maxwell Amoafo grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds while adding six points in the loss.

The Cougars will travel to Winnipeg to take on the Manitoba Bisons next weekend. The Huskies will take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns in an exhibition game next Friday.
