The University of Regina's women's hockey team earned a weekend split on Saturday afternoon after edging the Manitoba Bisons by a 3-2 score at the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg.
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch,
Paige Hubbard, and
Ireland Sorestad all scored for the Cougars while goalie
Katie Crowther made her second consecutive start and stopped 15 shots.
The Cougars outshot Manitoba by a 32-17 margin in the win.
"Not only did I think we played really well tonight, but I think we've played well the last couple of weekends and it's nice to finally get the results," Cougars head coach
Sarah Hodges said. "We definitely deserved to win today."
Regina went down early after Vanessa Klimpke's goal just under three minutes in, which stood as the only scoring of the opening period. The Cougars avoided the slow second period which plagued their Friday game against the Bisons, outshooting Manitoba by a 10-2 margin in the middle stanza and knotting the game at 1-1 after Carpenter-Boesch evaded two Bisons with a power move from the boards and snapped home her third goal of the season.
The Cougars took their first lead of the weekend when Hubbard shelved a snap shot from the left faceoff dot four minutes into the third.
Sorestad's goal, which turned out to be the game winner, came after a wild goalmouth sequence which saw both her and Hubbard have chances from in tight before Sorestad finally potted her third of the season.
Seconds after the Cougars thought they had gone up 4-1 after Sorestad appeared to have scored on a shorthanded breakway, Manitoba's Halle Edwards got the Bisons back to within one with a goal at the other end.
But Crowther shut the door the rest of the way, sealing the second regulation victory of the season for the Cougars (2-4-0-2).
The U of R will have next weekend off before returning to action on Nov. 19 and Nov. 20 at home against Trinity Western in what will be the first two meetings in history between the two squads.
NOTES: Carpenter-Boesch is tied for the team lead in goals (3) and is the U of R's outright leader in both assists (4) and points (7) ... the fifth-year forward has points in each of her last six games.
