The University of Regina's women's soccer team defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 2-0 in Saskatoon on Friday night.
Peyton Enns and
Kyra Vibert both scored to lead the way for the Cougars as they leapfrogged the Huskies into first place in the East Division. Peyton has been on fire to start the season, now with a team-leading four goals in five Canada West games.
Allyson Ford had another great game between the pipes, making three saves to record her third shutout of the season.
"So proud of this group today. They bought into the game plan and executed it amazingly," said Cougars interim co-head coach
Rob McCaffrey. "Credit to the Huskies- they are a great group but today our energy and attention to details is what enabled us to come out with the win. Every player bought into their role and put the team first. We know what this group is capable of and today we showed large moments of that."
Early in the first half,
Nicole Klassen moved the ball down the right side of the field before centering it to Enns. The first-year striker snuck the ball around a defender at the top of the box and put it past the keeper to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead and ultimately the game winner. The Huskies put the pressure on for the rest of the half, repeatedly moving the ball deep into the Cougars side of the field. The Regina back line did well to limit the Huskies chances, as the defense made three saves to stop the ball from getting close to
Allyson Ford and the net.
Two minutes into the second half, the Cougars struck again.
Kyra Vibert ran by Huskie defenders on a great through pass by Enns and beat the goaltender on a race to the ball for her second goal of the season. Late in the second, Saskatchewan had two chances for a goal, getting shut down by first-year defender
Haylee Evans on the first and missing a shot by inches on the second.
"We are looking to review and reset for an important game on Sunday and come out with the same energy, passion and focus."
The Cougars got its first victory against the Huskies since 2012, and just the second win on the road against them ever.
The Cougars host the Huskies on the U of R Field, at noon, on Sunday in another big game as the winner will build a three point lead in the division.
