Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Carter Millar powers Cougars to victory over Bobcats

The University of Regina's men's basketball team defeated the Brandon University Bobcats 86-55 on Friday night in Brandon.

The Cougars were led by fourth-year Carter Millar, who scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the double-double. Cougars center Majok Madol added 10 points and snagged 13 boards for his own double-double performance. The starting lineup came up big for the Cougars, with every starter scoring at least nine points. Sophomore Anthony Tsegakele double-doubled with a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds for the Bobcats.

Brandon started the game on a 5-0 run in the first minute. The Cougars clawed back to take an 8-7 lead minutes later and would hold onto it for the rest of the night. Cougars big Hayden Collier, coming back from injury to play in his first game of the season, drained three's on back-to-back Cougar possessions to put the Cougars up 24-10 late in the opening quarter. Nigel Warden scored on a layup in the final seconds to put the Cougars up 28-18 after one.

Both teams experienced shooting woes in the second quarter, with Regina shooting a combined 6-of-20 and Brandon going 3-of-15 on field goal attempts. Tsegakele scored seven of his teams nine points in the frame. Cougars guard Brayden Kuski hit a jumper as time expired to give the Cougars a 45-27 lead at the break.

The Bobcats fought back in the third quarter, scoring 21 points while holding the Cougars to 18. It was not enough to overcome the Cougars massive lead as they took a 63-48 lead into the final 10 minutes.

Brandon could not make a comeback in the fourth quarter as the offence could only muster up seven points compared to Regina's 23. Cougars first-year guards Dakota McBride-Marean and Logan Neumann made their Canada West debuts in the fourth quarter, with McBride-Marean scoring his first points by hitting both free throw attempts.

The two teams will face off again tomorrow, at 7:00, at the Healthy Living Centre in Brandon.
