MRU pulls away from Cougars with third period outburst

The University of Regina's women's hockey team came up short against the Mount Royal Cougars 5-1 Saturday afternoon in Canada West conference action at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.

Kaia Borbandy scored twice for Mount Royal while Tianna Ko, Maddison Toppe, and Tatum Amy had the others. Kaitlyn Ross stopped 10 of 11 shots in the win for the conference-leading MRU squad.

Shaylee Scraba scored the lone goal for Regina late in the second period, which ended Mount Royal's streak of three consecutive games with a shutout.

Ko and Borbandy scored the lone first period scores with goals within 33 seconds of each other. Though MRU enjoyed a 16-2 advantage in shots in the second, late in the period Jordan Kulbida broke into the offensive zone and delivered a high shot that went off Ross' blocker. Scraba batted in the rebound to cut the visitors' lead to one, but MRU was able to break through in the final period.

Toppe, Amy, and Borbandy all scored in a span of under four minutes in the back half of the third to end any hope of a Regina comeback.

The Cougars return to action on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5 against the Manitoba Bisons at home at The Co-operators Centre. Mount Royal will have an exhibition game next Friday before heading to the West Coast for a pair of games at UBC.
