The University of Regina's women's basketball team defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons to a score of 79-52 on Saturday night in Regina.
Cougars guard
Faith Reid, after hitting seven three-pointers yesterday, hit five more tonight en route to scoring a game-high 22 points. It was, however, the third quarter that made the biggest difference for the Cougars, as they poured in 29 points and held the Bisons to 14.
The two teams went at it in the first quarter, trading buckets in the opening five minutes. The two teams were tied 13-13 at the halfway point of the first quarter when a
Jade Belmore layup gave the Cougars the lead. The Cougars would hold that lead for the rest of the night. Reid scored 10 points in the first to give Regina a 23-17 lead after one.
The Cougars locked down defensively in the second, holding the Bisons to just 10 points. The two teams went cold in the final two minutes, with no made baskets from either team. The Cougars took a 42-29 lead into halftime.
Regina poured it on in the third quarter, hitting six threes and 52.6 percent of their shots. The ball was spread around the floor, as Reid,
Madeleine Tell,
Kaitlyn Tonita,
Dayna Pearce, and
Maddy Seida all hit threes in the third. The offensive burst helped the Cougars get out to a 71-43 lead after three quarters to put the game out of reach for the Bisons.
The fourth quarter was a poor-shooting quarter for both teams, as they each shot under 25 percent and combined for seventeen points. The Bisons could not make a comeback happen and the Cougars secured their sixth win of the season.
Belmore scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Cougars, who also got good performances from
Cara Misskey (eight points, three assists) and Tell (eight points, five rebounds).
Fifth-year Taylor Randall scored a team-high 17 points and added a team-high six rebounds for the Bisons. The only other Manitoba player to reach double-digit scoring numbers was Emerson Martin, who scored 10 points and had five rebounds.
The Cougars (6-6) will host the Brandon University Bobcats next Friday and Saturday while the Bisons (2-10) will head home to take on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in Winnipeg next weekend.
