Game Recap: Rams Football |

Rams lock up second place with convincing road win over Calgary

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina Rams locked up second place in the Canada West standings and clinched a home game in the Canada West semifinals with a 30-7 win over Calgary on Saturday afternoon at a snowy McMahon Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rams led 9-0 at halftime thanks to a pair of Aldo Galvan field goals, an early rouge off a punt, and a conceded safety.
  • Regina pulled away in the second half with three touchdowns in the span of four offensive possessions, first on a 24-yard pass from Noah Pelletier to Ethan Marshall eight minutes into the third quarter.
  • Pelletier aired out a long 35-yard pass to Emmett Steadman on the next possession to put the Rams up 23-0.
  • Playing in his first Canada West game, Marshall Erichsen capped the scoring for the Rams with an 11-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
  • Calgary's lone points of the game came on a two-yard touchdown run by Gob Deng later on in the fourth.

PLAYOFFS
  • On the out-of-town scoreboard, UBC dealt Saskatchewan its first loss of the season out in Vancouver. Combined with Manitoba's win over Alberta, UBC's win locks the Thunderbirds into third place and into a date with the Rams on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Mosaic Stadium in the conference semifinals. Game time for that one will be announced in the coming days.

NOTES
  • Anthony Bennett became the U of R single-season sack king in the victory, sharing a sack with Garth Knittig in the third quarter to give him a program-record seven for the year.
  • The majors scored by Marshall, Steadman, and Erichsen were the first career touchdowns for all three players.
  • Erichsen was brilliant in his first career game, rushing 14 times for 74 yards including his touchdown and adding two catches for 35 yards to end up with 109 all-purpose yards in the win.
  • Marshall didn't start for the Rams, but stepped in after an early injury to Riley Boersma. Marshall was the game's leading receiver with five catches for 96 yards.

QUOTABLE
  • "Today was a great team win. Our offence was able to get first downs and put together scoring drives when we needed them. Our defence played a dominant game and that's our expectation moving forward for both sides of the ball. Winning in Calgary is hard, and the players were able to accomplish that today. I'm very proud of all the players and our staff." - Rams head coach Mark McConkey

NEXT UP
  • The Rams will host Manitoba next Saturday afternoon (2:00) at Mosaic Stadium. The Bisons (3-4) need a win to clinch the fourth and final playoff berth, which will go to either Manitoba or Alberta depending on next week's results. Alberta would hold the tiebreaker over Manitoba if the two teams finish the year tied.
