Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sackmann's goal in injury time gives Cougars 2-1 postseason win over Manitoba

QUICKLY
  • Makenna Sackmann's goal in injury time lifted the University of Regina's women's soccer team to a 2-1 road victory over Manitoba on Saturday in a Canada West play-in match at IG Field in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jenna Kunkel opened the scoring for Manitoba in the 34th minute, giving the Bisons a 1-0 lead at halftime.
  • The Cougars tied it up in the 67th minute after Peyton Enns was fouled in the box. Enns stepped up and buried the penalty kick to tie up the game.
  • Just when it looked like the game might go to extra time, Makenna Sackmann buried a goal on a beautiful volley off a Jessica Merk corner kick. Sackmann's goal came in injury time, just seconds before the referee blew the whistle for full time.

NOTES
  • Saturday's win was the second postseason victory in program history. The Cougars' only other playoff win came in the Canada West quarterfinals in 2012, an epic victory over Saskatchewan which needed a penalty shootout to finally decide.
  • Allyson Ford made eight saves in the victory for Regina.

PLAYOFFS
  • The win puts the Cougars into the Canada West quarterfinals, and for the second consecutive season they'll head to the West Coast to face UBC with the winner to earn a trip to the Canada West Final Four. That match is scheduled for Friday night at 6:30 (PDT).

QUOTABLE
  • "Our hearts are with MacEwan's players and staff given what happened earlier this week. We didn't want to take for granted the opportunity that these circumstances gave us, and I'm so proud of what we were able to accomplish tonight. We've learned some big lessons this year and tonight we applied them, and now we'll look forward to facing a quality UBC squad next weekend." - Cougars head coach Astrid Baecker
