The University of Regina's women's hockey team was defeated 6-1 by the UBC Thunderbirds in both teams' final game of the Canada West schedule on Saturday afternoon at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver.
Grace Elliott, Karine Sandilands, Joelle Fiala, Ireland Perrott, Ashley McFadden, and Rylind MacKinnon all scored in the win for UBC.
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch scored the Cougars' lone goal with a slap shot from the high slot late in the third period with the U of R on a power play. It was the fifth-year forward's team-leading 10th goal of the season and she also finishes Canada West play with team highs in assists (9) and points (19).
First-year goaltender
Natalie Williamson got her first career start between the pipes for the Cougars, ending up with 28 saves on the afternoon.
UBC finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Cougars were 1-for-4 as Carpenter-Boesch's goal came while UBC was serving a five-minute major assessed to Chanreet Bassi for checking from behind. The Thunderbirds finished with a 34-10 shot advantage in the win.
The Cougars will now await the conclusion of Saturday night's Alberta/Calgary game to determine their opponent for next weekend's best-of-three quarterfinal series.
