Faith Reid sets single-season three-pointers record in win over Brandon

Faith Reid set the University of Regina's single-season three-pointers record on Friday night as the Cougars put the finishing touches on a weekend sweep with an 88-58 win over Brandon at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Reid came into the contest one triple short of the old record of 59 which Katie Polischuk set during the 2013-14 season. Reid tied the mark in the first quarter, then hit her 60th of the season on the team's first possession of the second half.

"It's incredibly meaningful to be able to take this away from my time here," Reid said following the game. "And it's a lot more than just the record. I'm so proud of how my career has gone, and this is just the icing on the cake for me."

And Reid hit two more triples after breaking the record, setting the U of R's new single-season standard at 62.

While Reid etched her name into the record book in her final game at the CKHS, it was Jade Belmore that led the Cougars with a game-high 23 points. Julia Vydrova had another big game for the U of R with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Kaitlyn Tonita - another graduating senior - hit three triples and added 11 points.

Maddy Seida also scored in double figures for the Cougars, coming off the bench to collect a season-high 10 points.

Reetta Tulkki had a team-leading 15 points for Brandon, which finishes the Canada West schedule with an 0-16 record and will head into the conference postseason as either the No. 16 or No. 17 seed. Adrianna Proulx added 14 points for the Bobcats, who are assured of facing UNBC in the first round of the Canada West single-elimination playoff bracket.

Friday's game saw the Cougars jump out to a 20-5 lead through one quarter. They held a 40-23 advantage to halftime and led by as many as 35 points late before Brandon brought the eventual margin of victory down to 30.

The win pulls Regina's record up to 8-8 for the season. The Cougars were locked into third place in Canada West's East Division heading into the weekend, and now know they'll be the conference's No. 7 seed in the postseason. They've earned a bye through to the second round next Saturday, where they'll play the winner of the 10/17 matchup.

NOTES: The Cougars honoured graduating seniors Reid, Tonita, and Zoe Hartmann following the game.
