Nolan Yaremko's overtime goal midway through the first overtime period gave Mount Royal the Game 2 victory on Saturday and a two-game sweep over the Regina Cougars in their best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series in Calgary.
Regina had led for the majority of the game after
Tanner Sidaway and
Conner Chaulk answered an early goal by MRU's Andrew Fyten, but Mount Royal tied it up late in regulation on a goal by Kyle Walker with the goalie pulled for an extra attacker.
It was the second one-goal victory in as many nights for Mount Royal as the No. 3 seed held off a Regina comeback for a 4-3 victory on Friday night in the first game of the series.
Fyten opened the scoring with a shot from the faceoff circle in the first two minutes of the game, but Sidaway replied just five minutes later after snapping a loose puck past Mount Royal's Riley Morris to tie it up.
Chaulk gave Regina the lead just before the first intermission after finishing a nice pass from
Mike Eskra in tight.
And the score stayed 2-1 for the next 39 minutes until Mount Royal pulled Morris. Walker scored on a one-timer from below the right faceoff dot to send the game to overtime, and Yaremko's winner came after an attempted pass bounced off a Regina player right to the second-year forward at the side of the net.
Mount Royal advances to the Canada West semifinals and will head to Vancouver next weekend to face UBC in a best-of-three series.
