Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars close out Canada West schedule with win over Manitoba

The University of Regina men's hockey team defeated the Manitoba Bisons by a score of 6-3 on Saturday afternoon in a Canada West game at the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg.

Tyler Heidt's two power play goals and Brennan Riddle's three assists helped the Cougars complete a weekend and season sweep over the Bisons. Regina finished 3-for-5 with the man advantage and Curtis Meger picked up his third win of the season, making 31 saves.

"We're happy with the outcome," said Cougars' head coach Todd Johnson. "It was a battle and was one of the rougher games of the year. For the most part, I thought we did a good job being disciplined. We had our power play going, and we're just happy to come out with the win."

The two teams combined for 38 minutes in penalties, 32 of which were whistled against the Bisons. Not only did hte Cougars strike three times on the power play, but they also scored another just eight seconds after Manitoba's first penalty expired.

Regina scored the game's first goal when Tate Coughlin circled back with the puck in the offensive zone and found Christian Riemer breaking in for a quick shot past Jeremy Link. Heidt and Turner Ripplinger extended the Cougars lead to three with two power play goals in the first frame. Heidt's came from the point while Ripplinger's deflected off a Bisons defenceman.

The Bisons came out strong in the second, scoring two quick goals from Hayden Ostir and Geordie Keane. The Cougars held strong though, after Heidt scored his second power play goal on a top-shelf shot past a screened Link. Bryce Platt restored Regina's three-goal lead after deflecting a shot from Riemer in the dying seconds of the period.

Manitoba managed to get one more past Meger after Nathan Halvorsen scored on a third period delayed penalty. Ty Barnstable put the game to rest after a long empty-net goal from the Cougars' end for his first of the season.

The Cougars will take a two-week break before their first game of the Canada West quarterfinals on Feb. 25. With just four points separating first place from fifth place in the conference standings, the U of R's opponent for that series is still up in the air.
