For the second time in as many nights the University of Regina's women's hockey team overcame a two-goal deficit against the Manitoba Bisons as the Cougars took a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at The Co-operators Centre.
Saturday's game was a near-carbon copy of Friday's game including Manitoba jumping out to a 2-0 lead off first-period goals by Lauren Warkentin and Jena Barscello.
And, just like Friday, the goals by Warkentin and Barscello were then followed by a
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch goal to draw the Cougars to within one. That goal came well into the second period, and Carpenter-Boesch struck again just over a minute into the third period after banging home a rebound following a partial breakaway by
Heather Fiske.
Jordan Kulbida scored the game-winning goal midway through the third on an absolute missile of a one-timer off a feed from
Megan Long on the power play. The Cougars were outshot 8-5 in the third, but were able to hang on for the critical late-season victory over the Bisons.
"I'm especially happy with our team's ability to bounce back from deficits both nights," Cougars head coach
Sarah Hodges said. "That's something we may not have been able to do a few weeks ago, but they worked hard all weekend and it's real nice to see them get rewarded for it.
Fittingly, two graduating players accounted for all three goals on Senior Day.
"I thought our seniors stepped it up and that's always such a lift for the group," Hodges said. "Lilla had a great weekend points-wise, Ireland (Sorestad) was fantastic as always, and it was nice to see Kulbida get that game winner today doing what she does best."
The weekend sweep vaults the Cougars (7-9-0) into sole possession of the final Canada West postseason berth as they pass idle Calgary to move into sixth place in the conference standings. The Cougars will have next weekend off, but will be watching the out-of-town scoreboard in earnest as both Calgary and MacEwan have two games in hand on the U of R. Calgary has a home-and-home with league-leading Mount Royal, while MacEwan plays a home-and-home with Alberta.
The Cougars' final two games on the schedule are set for Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 at UBC.
Still very much in contention for a bye through to the Canada West semifinals, Manitoba (11-7-0) will close out the conference slate next weekend with two home games against Saskatchewan.
