Rams take out No. 6 Manitoba for 33-23 road victory

HEADLINE
The University of Regina Rams walked into IG Field in Winnipeg and took a 33-23 victory over No. 6-ranked Manitoba on Friday night in both teams' 2022 Canada West opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Manitoba got the game's first major and the Bisons led 7-5 after the opening quarter, but the Rams replied on a 14-yard Kyle Borsa rushing touchdown with eight minutes to go in the second
  • The Bisons led 17-13 at the break, but Noah Pelletier found Bennett Stusek for a 69-yard touchdown that put the Rams up 20-17 early in the third quarter
  • The Rams scored again fewer than two minutes later when Ryder Varga blocked a punt and Jaxon Ford scooped it up and ran it in for the major, giving the Rams a 27-17 cushion
  • The Rams led by two scores for the remainder of the game, with a Varga interception sealing the victory with a minute remaining in the contest

RAMS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Anthony Bennett had three of the U of R's five sacks, becoming the first Ram to collect three in a game since the 2016 season
  • Pelletier completed 14 of his 24 pass attempts and finished with 244 passing yards, his longest on the 69-yard connection to Stusek
  • Stusek had five catches and finished with a game-high 134 receiving yards
  • Donovin Small and Varga had Regina's two interceptions, while Garth Knittig and Michael Clow also had sacks for the Rams

QUOTABLE
"It's always nice to leave a road stadium with a win. The guys battled hard tonight and we didn't play nearly to our full potential, which is the scary thing. I loved how we rallied in the fourth quarter when they started to come back a bit. Finishing is something we've been preaching all camp and we were able to get stops and first downs when we needed to." - Rams head coach Mark McConkey

NEXT UP
The Rams (1-0) host their home opener next Friday against Calgary. The Dinos are 0-1 on the season after a 44-5 home loss to Saskatchewan.
