Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

No. 1 Dinos pull away from Cougars for Thursday win

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team kept it close with No. 1-ranked Calgary through 40 minutes, but the Dinos exploded for five unanswered goals in the third and won 9-2 over the Cougars on Thursday night at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Calgary's Connor Gutenberg opened the scoring on a weird bounce off a wraparound attempt just 19 seconds in, but the Cougars replied in the form of a Riley Krane shot from the slot just before the midway point of the opening frame.
  • Marty Westhaven put Calgary back into the lead late in the first, wheeling around the U of R net and snapping a shot to the far side.
  • Arjun Atwal and Colson Gengenbach both scored in the second period for the Dinos, but the U of R's Carson Sass scored with a shot from the point on the power play to make the score 4-2 in favour of Calgary at the second intermission.
  • The third period was all Calgary, starting with Josh Maser's goal just 30 seconds in. That was followed by Calgary goals from Max Patterson, Riley Stotts, Bradley Schoonbaert, and Maser as the Dinos locked up their 16th consecutive victory.

NOTES
  • Jake Fletcher assisted on both Regina goals, giving him four helpers in his last two games and 10 points in 10 Canada West games played this season.
  • Evanoff played all 60 minutes and made 31 saves as Calgary held a 40-31 advantage in shots.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will host Calgary again on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
