Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Sorestad scores early, but Cougars fall 2-1 to Calgary

QUICKLY
  • Two third-period goals gave the Calgary Dinos a 2-1 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in Calgary.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars took advantage of an early Calgary miscue. Jenna Merk recovered the puck behind the Dinos net following a turnover off a Regina dump-in, then fed it out front to Ireland Sorestad who opened the scoring with her first of the year.
  • The score stayed 1-0 through the first two periods. Calgary wasn't able to solve starting Cougar goalie Natalie Williamson until well into the third period, when Sydney Mercier scored a shorthanded goal to tie the game at 1-1 eight minutes into the final frame.
  • Alli Borrow scored the game winner just over two minutes after Mercier's goal. The Cougars pulled Williamson with two and a half minutes remaining, but weren't able to find the equalizer.

NOTES
  • Williamson made her second consecutive start and stopped 25 of Calgary's 27 shots.
  • Merk's assist on Sorestad's goal was her seventh of the season.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will play Calgary again on Saturday before heading back to Regina. Game time is set for 3:00 PM (MST).
