Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars drop close one to No. 3 Victoria

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's basketball team dropped a tight 82-78 decision to No. 3-ranked Victoria on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars led by as many as 16 points after going up 63-47 late in the third quarter and were up 14 at one point in the fourth after a Brayden Kuski triple, but Victoria's Renoldo Robinson sparked a 9-0 run for the Vikes that brought the Regina lead down to five midway through the final quarter.
  • Nigel Warden's bucket with 2:27 left put the Cougars up 77-72, but that would be Regina's last field goal of the game. Victoria replied with another Robinson bucket and a Diego Maffia triple on their next two possessions to tie it up. After a Carter Millar free throw put the Cougars up 78-77 with a minute left, Victoria's Trent Monkman put home a layup to give the Vikes their first lead since the opening quarter.
  • Maffia hit a pair of free throws on the next possession following a Cougar turnover, then hit a final free throw with seven seconds left that put the game out of reach.

NOTES
  • Millar finished with 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Cougars. Kuski had 17 points and both Nick Barnard and Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo scored 10.
  • Maffia had a game-high 28 points for Victoria, while Robinson scored 24.

NEXT UP
  • The two teams will play again on Saturday night at the CKHS following the conclusion of the women's game. Start time is set for 8:00 PM.
