Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars defeat Winnipeg, grab final Prairie Division playoff berth on last day of season

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's soccer team seized the fifth and final Prairie Division postseason berth with a 3-0 road victory over Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars dominated possession from the opening kick and it took just 12 minutes before getting on the board with a beautiful strike off the left foot of Jessica Merk.
  • Regina continued to pepper Winnipeg goalkeeper Taryn Raabe and broke through again in the 43rd minute just seconds after having a goal called back. Peyton Enns slipped a pass from the goal line into Kirsten Koellmel, who chipped it in to put the Cougars up two heading into the break.
  • The Cougars finished off the scoring in the late going when Sana Karam struck in the 81st minute, all but sealing the win and their fifth consecutive trip to the Canada West playoffs.

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS
  • As much as the Cougars needed a result against Winnipeg, they also needed help on the out-of-town scoreboard and got that help with a 2-1 win for Saskatchewan over Manitoba.
  • The two matches leapfrogged the Cougars (3-6-5) over Manitoba into fifth place in the Prairie Division standings.
  • Fifth-place Regina will travel to Edmonton next weekend for a play-in match against Alberta. The Pandas finished with a 4-7-3 record in Canada West play, one point ahead of the Cougars in the final standings.
  • Next Saturday's play-in match will mark the first time the Cougars and the Pandas have ever met in the postseason. Regina also travelled to Edmonton for the play-in round back in 2019, but played Victoria at MacEwan's home pitch in a neutral-site match.

NOTES
  • Enns was credited with assists on two of Regina's three goals on Sunday, setting up the strikes by both Koellmel and Karam.
  • The Cougars had 24 shot attempts to Winnipeg's 3 and held a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Kareena Andersen stopped all three shots she faced to earn her first career Canada West shutout.

NEXT UP
Though next weekend's play-in match at Alberta is expected to be contested on Saturday, Canada West will finalize the exact time of kickoff by no later than Monday.
