QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team stayed undefeated in Canada West play after grinding out a 54-49 win over Thompson Rivers on Saturday night in Kamloops, B.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A defensive battle from the tip, TRU led 13-12 after the opening quarter and the teams went into the halftime break tied at 28-28.
- The third quarter featured a total of just nine points scored between the two teams, six by TRU and three by Regina. All three of Regina's third-quarter points were on free throws as the Cougars went well over 11 minutes without scoring a field goal.
- Luke Harold's three-pointer on the first possession of the fourth quarter not only ended the drought, but kicked off a game-changing 13-2 run for the Cougars. That turned what had been a six-point lead for Thompson Rivers heading into the final quarter into a 44-39 advantage for Regina and though TRU made it a one-score game on three subsequent occasions, the Cougars responded quickly each time and sealed the win with late free throws.
NOTES
- The Cougars (4-0) sit atop the 17-team Canada West standings ahead of a quartet of one-loss teams which includes Brandon and Winnipeg at 5-1 and UNBC and Victoria at 3-1.
- Saturday's contest goes into the book as the second lowest-scoring game in University of Regina history. The Cougars' only game ever to feature fewer total points occurred on Nov. 20, 1970 in a 63-35 loss to Victoria.
- After collecting his first Canada West double-double on Friday, Hayden Collier had another one on Saturday with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
- Matt Barnard led the Cougars with 12 points while Cade Mather (11), Collier, and Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo (10) also hit double figures in scoring.
NEXT UP
The Cougars will now prepare for their home openers against Fraser Valley (3-3) next Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. Both of those games will tip off at 8:00 PM following the conclusion of the women's games.
