Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Pearce scores twice as Cougars earn weekend split with win over MacEwan

QUICKLY
Eric Pearce had a pair of goals to lead the University of Regina's men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over MacEwan on Saturday at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After being shut out in Friday's game, it took the Cougars just over three minutes to get on the board on Saturday with Pearce's first of the contest. Jakob Brook poked the puck to Pearce at the side of the net following a Carson Whyte shot, and Pearce knocked it home.
  • Pearce added to the lead shorthanded later in the period. Leyton Holoien made a nice play at the blue line to poke the puck away from a MacEwan forward and that sent Pearce in on a breakaway. Pearce went five-hole to notch his second of the game and his fifth of the season.
  • Just 39 seconds into the second period with Regina on a 5-on-3, MacEwan's Kadyn Chabot got a chance at the side of the net and appeared to ring the puck off the far post. Play continued for nearly a minute until the next stoppage and after the referees convened, they ruled that the shot fully crossed the line and gave Chabot the goal.
  • MacEwan tied it up on their next power play opportunity and again it was off the stick of Chabot. Loeden Schaufler led the first-year forward with a stretch pass and Chabot broke in alone on Adam Evanoff, going five-hole for his second of the game.
  • The Cougars took the lead back later on in the second with what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Eric Houk took advantage of a MacEwan miscue and ended up with a breakaway, evading a Griffins defender and going to his backhand to beat MacEwan's Ashton Abel.
  • Matt Culling one-timed a snap shot off a pass from Paycen Bjorklund just two minutes after Houk's goal, giving Culling his first of the season and restoring the two-goal lead for the Cougars.
  • The third period featured no goals or penalties. MacEwan pulled Abel with over a minute to go, but the Cougars held strong to seal the win.

NOTES
  • Pearce's two-goal game was his second of the season.
  • Making his third consecutive start and his second in as many nights, Evanoff stopped 27 of MacEwan's 29 shots and earned his third win of the season.
  • MacEwan was 2-for-7 on the power play while Regina was 0-for-3.
  • The Cougars (4-10-2) go out of the weekend in the same position they entered it, three points back of MacEwan for sixth place in the Canada West standings.

NEXT UP
The Cougars close out the first half of the Canada West schedule next weekend with a road trip to the West Coast. They'll square off with No. 7-ranked UBC on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
