Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Gilroy scores overtime winner as Cougars take wild 7-6 road win over Calgary

QUICKLY
Kaitlyn Gilroy scored with just 11 seconds to go in overtime to give the University of Regina's women's hockey team a wild 7-6 win over Calgary on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Calgary threw the first punch with goals by Sydney Mercier and Jolie Nafziger just 98 seconds apart, but Gilroy replied with her first of the game just over a minute later.
  • The Dinos restored the two-goal lead on a Brooklin Fry power play goal late in the opening frame.
  • The two teams combined for five goals in the second period, beginning with a Paige Hubbard goal just 35 seconds into the middle stanza. Solana Cooper then scored for Calgary, but that goal was answered by a Hannah Pennell power play marker just 24 seconds later. Nafziger scored again less than two minutes after Pennell's goal, and Makena Kushniruk scored on the power play late in the second to cut Calgary's lead to 5-4 through 40 minutes.
  • Jadyn Kushniruk scored shorthanded just a minute into the third to tie it up, and later in the period made history when she scored again with Calgary on the power play to become the first player in U of R history ever to notch a pair of shorthanded goals in a single game.
  • Jadyn Kushniruk's second goal came with six minutes to go and put Regina up 6-5, but Calgary's Kyla Mitenko scored with just 40 seconds remaining in regulation to push the game to overtime.
  • In the extra session, Calgary was assessed a double minor for kneeing and the Cougars were able to convert with just seconds to go. Shaylee Scraba drove hard to the net and had her shot saved, but the rebound squeaked out to Gilroy who tapped it home for the winner.

NOTES
  • The game was the highest-scoring contest involving the U of R in nearly 23 years. The total of 13 goals scored is eclipsed only by Regina's 16-0 win over Calgary on Feb. 2, 2001 and the Cougars' 10-4 win over Saskatchewan on Nov. 5, 1999.
  • Regina's seven goals stand as the most scored by the Cougars since they also scored seven in a 7-0 shutout win over Calgary on Oct. 3, 2015. The last time Regina scored more goals in a game was in an 8-1 win over Saint Mary's at the 2003 CIS Championship.
  • Cougar goalie Arden Kliewer came on in relief after Calgary's fifth goal and surrendered just one goal. Kliewer stopped 13 of the 14 shots she faced to notch her second victory of the season.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will play Calgary one more time before returning to Regina. The two teams will meet again at 2:00 PM on Saturday.
