Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars continue hot start with win over Brandon

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team continued its torrid start to the Canada West schedule with a 75-63 win over Brandon on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandon jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but the Cougars followed up with an 18-4 run that put them up seven after the first quarter.
  • The Cougars went on a quick 8-0 run early in the second as Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo and Matt Barnard hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions and Lodie Kenyi followed that up with a bucket on the next one. That put the Cougars up 13, though Brandon was able to cut into the lead as Regina took a 35-27 lead into the halftime break.
  • The Bobcats continued to make inroads on the Regina lead in the third, and broke through late in the quarter as back-to-back baskets by Travis Hamberger and Khari Ojeda-Harvey gave Brandon its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest. Emeka-Anyakwo hit a triple with seconds to go in the third to give Regina a slim 51-50 lead as the game went into the final period.
  • As the Cougars have done all season, they won the game on the defensive side of the ball. Brandon's Elisha Ampofo scored a basket with just over three minutes to go to get the visitors to within six, but that turned out to be the Bobcats' final field goal of the game. Emeka-Anyakwo and Kenyi got buckets on consecutive possessions which put the Cougars up 12 with a minute to go, all but locking up the win for the U of R.

NOTES
  • The win for the Cougars was their seventh consecutive victory, tying a program record for the most consecutive conference wins in a single season. The team also registered seven straight Canada West wins in both 2005-06 and 2017-18, as well as winning seven consecutive Great Plains Athletic Conference games back during the 1997-98 campaign.
  • Emeka-Anyakwo finished with a career-high 23 points while also collecting 7 rebounds.
  • Matt Barnard had a double-double, scoring 22 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
  • Kenyi almost joined the 20-point club, finishing with a season-high 19 in the win.
