Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 4 UBC hangs on for 2-1 win over Cougars

QUICKLY
The Regina Cougars made things interesting with a goal late in the third period, but the No. 4-ranked UBC Thunderbirds held on for a 2-1 victory on Friday night in a Canada West women's hockey game at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period, UBC's Cassidy Rhodes opened the scoring after looping through the Regina zone, walking into the slot, and scoring on a hard shot from the slot just a couple minutes into the second.
  • The Thunderbirds pushed the lead to two just past the midway mark of the second when Canada West goals leader Mackenzie Kordic slipped her 11th of the season in from the side of the net.
  • The Cougars broke through with just under five minutes to go in the third period. Megan Long took the puck into the UBC zone and slipped a pass over to Kaitlyn Gilroy, who fought off a Thunderbird checker and chipped it in to get Regina to within one.
  • Regina pulled Kliewer in the final minute, but the Cougars weren't able to find the equalizer.

NOTES
  • Kliewer was brilliant for the Cougars, making a season-high 40 saves.
  • Neither team was able to connect with the power play. The Cougars ended up 0-for-6 with the advantage while UBC was 0-for-4.
  • UBC, which held a 42-16 edge in shots on Friday, continues to have a one-point lead atop the Canada West standings.
  • The Cougars continue to be locked in what right now is a four-way battle for the final two Canada West playoff berths. Trinity Western and Manitoba sit at 13 points, the Cougars have 12, and Calgary has 11.

NEXT UP
Regina and UBC will play again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
