Cougars sweep MacEwan; finish with 17-3 record and claim No. 2 seed in playoffs

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's basketball team jumped out to a huge early lead and rolled to a 72-51 win over MacEwan on Saturday night in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars led 27-12 after the first quarter, then surrendered just three points in the second quarter to extend the lead to 43-15 at the halftime break.
  • Regina put it into cruise control in the second half, leading by as many as 33 points and maintaining a comfortable 20-point advantage for almost all of the final 20 minutes.

NOTES
  • Jade Belmore and Maddy Seida both had 15 points to lead the Cougars, with Belmore adding 11 rebounds to notch another double-double.
  • Julia Vydrova and Zoe Hartmann also scored in double figures with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
  • The Cougars (17-3) finish in first place in the Canada West standings, but will be the No. 2 seed in the postseason based on RPI.

PLAYOFFS
  • Regina will be one of four first-round hosts next weekend. No. 7 seed Trinity Western and No. 10 seed Victoria will play a neutral-site game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on Friday night with the winner advancing to face the Cougars in a Canada West quarterfinal on Saturday night.
