Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars push No. 1 Victoria, but fall to Vikes in quarterfinals

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's basketball team hung tough with top-seeded Victoria, but the Vikes finally pulled away in the last four minutes and took an 88-70 win on Saturday night in a Canada West quarterfinal game in Victoria.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half couldn't have been played much tighter as neither team led by more than five points and it was a one-possession game for all but 56 seconds of the opening 20 minutes.
  • The teams went into the halftime break tied up at 33-33, and the Cougars opened up the second half with eight straight points on a run that featured two Carter Millar triples. Regina continued to lead until Victoria scored on each of its final four possessions of the third quarter as part of a quick 10-2 run that put the Vikes up 55-52.
  • Victoria held onto the lead for the entirety of the fourth quarter. The Cougars made it a one-possession game on another three-pointer by Millar with just over four minutes to go, but that turned out to be Regina's final field goal of the night and the Vikes scored 16 of the game's final 17 points to seal the win.

NOTES
  • Millar was spectacular in what was his final game of his brilliant five-year career with the Cougars, draining seven three-pointers and leading all players in points (31) and rebounds (13).
  • Brayden Kuski also played his final game with the U of R, finishing with 14 points and adding 8 rebounds.

NEXT UP
  • Victoria moves on to the Canada West semifinals and will host No. 5-seeded UBC next weekend.

A LOOK BACK
  • The Cougars played what was arguably the toughest schedule of any U SPORTS team this year and finished the season with a 16-17 overall record, including a 10-10 mark in conference play which landed them the No. 8 seed in the Canada West postseason.
  • The U of R's graduating class includes not only Millar and Kuski, but major contributors Nigel Warden and Majok Madol as well. Warden played all five years at the U of R, while Madol played his final two years of eligibility with the Cougars after stints in the NJCAA and NCAA Div. I. Hayden Collier appeared in 12 Canada West games this season and also finishes his U SPORTS eligibility.
