Cougars defeated by UBC as Thunderbirds claim best-of-three quarterfinal

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team lost 7-0 to UBC on Saturday night, giving the Thunderbirds a two-game sweep in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series in Vancouver.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC opened up a 2-0 lead by the six-minute mark of the first period with an early power play goal by Chris Douglas and an even-strength marker by Josh Williams. Tian Rask added another one late in the frame to put the Thunderbirds up 3-0 through 20 minutes.
  • Liam Kindree added another one for UBC late in the second to extend the lead to 4-0, and Douglas and Williams both scored power play goals for the Thunderbirds in the third period before Sasha Mutala added a late one to cap the scoring.

NOTES
  • Adam Evanoff made his eighth consecutive start in net for the Cougars and made 25 saves.
  • The two teams ended up even in the shots on net category with both Regina and UBC registering 32.
  • UBC finished 3-for-8 on the power play while the Cougars were scoreless on their five opportunities with the man advantage.
  • No. 3-seeded UBC moves on to the Canada West semifinals. The Thunderbirds will face No. 2 Alberta next weekend in a best-of-three series in Edmonton.
