Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars fall in overtime to Calgary

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's basketball team suffered an 86-80 overtime loss to the Calgary Dinos on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars led for nearly all of regulation, opening up a 33-15 lead at one point in the second after opening that quarter on a 13-3 run.
  • Calgary stayed within range, cutting Regina's halftime lead of 15 points down to 9 at the end of the third quarter.
  • Regina got an Eden Wells layup with five and a half minutes to go to go up 73-64, but five different Calgary players scored in a 12-0 run for the Dinos that gave them their first lead since the opening quarter.
  • Dayna Pearce got a big bucket to put the Cougars back up 76-75 with just over a minute to go, but Calgary tied it with just 0.4 seconds left on the clock when Mya Proctor hit one of her two free throws to send the game to overtime.
  • Calgary got a layup on the opening possession of overtime, but the offence dried up for both teams as the only other field goal of the extra session came after Calgary hit six consecutive free throws to make it a three-possession game in the final minute.

NOTES
  • Jade Belmore had her second consecutive 30-point effort, going off for 32 points while also tying for the game high with 14 rebounds and leading all players with 6 assists.
  • Cara Misskey was injured just four minutes into Friday's game. With Misskey out, second-year guard Eden Wells played a career-high 30 minutes for the Cougars.
  • Zoe Hartmann added 15 points and 8 rebounds for Regina, while Dayna Pearce had 11 points while pulling down 14 rebounds.
  • Proctor led Calgary (11-6) with 23 points.
