Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars gain point, but fall 2-1 to Huskies in shootout

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team picked up a crucial point on Saturday night, but lost 2-1 to Saskatchewan in a shootout at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saskatchewan opened up the scoring just three minutes into the game when Jeffrey Faith took a pass from Carter Stebbings on a 2-on-1 and tallied his first of the season.
  • The Huskies had a hefty 12-5 advantage in shots in addition to the 1-0 lead through 20 minutes, but the Cougars tied it up early in the second when Riley Krane won a footrace following a Jake Fletcher clearance and scored his ninth of the year.
  • Neither team was able to score in the third or in either of the two overtimes, sending it to a shootout.
  • After both teams scored in the opening round, Liam Keeler kept Saskatchewan alive with a goal in the third round after Jackson Doucet had scored for the Cougars. Two rounds later, Saskatchewan's Vince Loschiavo scored the winner for the Huskies.

NOTES
  • The Cougars (8-15-3) gain a critical point as they look to hang onto the final Canada West playoff position, but the out-of-town scoreboard wasn't as kind on Saturday as it was on Friday. MacEwan took a 2-1 road win over Mount Royal to join the Cougars with 19 points, though Regina holds the tiebreaker over the Griffins based on head-to-head results.

NEXT UP
  • Regina closes out the Canada West schedule next weekend with a road trip to the West Coast for a pair of games at UBC. If the Cougars are able to hang on to the final playoff berth, they'll enter the postseason as the No. 6 seed and meet one of Alberta, UBC, or Mount Royal for a best-of-three quarterfinal series.
