Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Focht and Kushniruk score, Williamson brilliant in 2-1 win over Saskatchewan

QUICKLY
  • Jadyn Kushniruk's goal early in the third period stood as the winner as the University of Regina's women's hockey team took a 2-1 victory over Saskatchewan on Sunday afternoon in Saskatoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • McKenna Bolger opened the scoring for Saskatchewan with a goal six minutes in, but that would be the only goal surrendered by Regina netminder Natalie Williamson.
  • Lauren Focht notched the only goal of the second period, redirecting a nice centering pass from Heather Fiske on the left half-wall with the Cougars on the power play.
  • Jadyn Kushniruk put the Cougars ahead just over a minute into the final period, taking a pass from her sister Makena Kushniruk on a 2-on-1 and going backhand shelf for her fifth of the season.
  • Saskatchewan outshot Regina 17-3 in the final period, but Williamson turned them all aside to help the Cougars lock up the road victory.

NOTES
  • Williamson was brilliant in net for the Cougars all night, turning aside 37 of Saskatchewan's 38 shots in the victory.
  • Kushniruk's goal marked the first time since at least 2002 that a U of R player assisted on her sister's goal.
  • Trinity Grove also assisted on Focht's goal.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will close out the 2022-23 season against UBC next weekend at home at The Co-operators Centre. The two teams will meet at 7:00 PM on Friday and at 3:00 PM on Saturday.
