QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 road draw with the Alberta Pandas on Saturday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first half, the Cougars got on the board first when Enns was fouled inside the area. Peyton Enns stepped up and buried her first of the season on the ensuing penalty kick, putting Regina up 1-0 in the 62nd minute.
- Alberta drew level in the 71st minute on a goal by Emily Duxbury which was assisted by Erin Hope, and that Pandas goal was quickly followed by a red card assessed to Cougar defender Delaney Rhinehart.
- Despite being a player down, the Cougars had a brilliant opportunity to take the lead in the late going when Enns was again brought down inside the area on a dangerous rush. Nicole Klassen took a well-struck shot from the spot, but Alberta keeper Autumn Wynn dove to her left to make a fine save and keep the score tied.
- Alberta had a chance in added time when the Pandas were awarded a corner kick, but the U of R defence dealt with the opportunity nicely to help seal a critical road draw.
QUOTABLE
"I am so proud of our team's commitment to compete and the leadership on the field in key moments of the game. We were down a player for the final 20 minutes, and the way we rose to that challenge showed we can adapt in-game and still compete. I give so much credit to the finishing 10 players on that field that preserved the draw and ensured we brought home a point. I feel the work we did in the offseason and during preseason really prepared us to have an attacking mindset and hold meaningful possession in our build and create phase." - Cougars head coach Astrid Baecker
NOTES
- Alberta had a 14-8 edge in shot attempts and both teams finished with four shots on goal.
- Enns' goal was the ninth Canada West strike of her career. She needs just one more to become the fifth player in U of R history to hit double digits in goals scored.
- After making seven saves in Friday's conference opener, Cougars keeper Kareena Andersen made three more against Alberta and is now tied for second in Canada West with 10 saves for the season.
NEXT UP
The Cougars will have next weekend off, then will return to the pitch on Sept. 9 and Sept. 10 with their home openers against Winnipeg and Manitoba. Kickoff is set for noon both days at the U of R Field.
