• Both teams enter Week 3 looking for their first win of the season. The Rams have opened up the year with losses to UBC and Saskatchewan, while Calgary has been defeated by Alberta and UBC.
• The winner of this game will move to 1-2 and could jump into sole possession of fourth place in the Canada West standings. Manitoba also enters the week at 0-2 and the Bisons are on the road at UBC on Saturday in a contest that will kick off at the same time as the Rams/Dinos game.
• Saturday's game will be the only time these two teams will meet in Canada West play. Alberta is the other team that the Rams will play only once this year.
LEADING THE WAY: K
Aldo Galvan had another solid game in Week 2, punting 7 times for an average of 49.7 yards per kick. The fifth-year kicker has taken over the national lead in yards per punt (49.8) through the first two weeks of the season. Concordia's Eric Maximuik (who hails from Regina and played for the Regina Thunder last year) and McMaster's Michael Horvat are second and third with averages of 48.5 and 48.2, respectively.
MIMBS REPORT: SB
D'Sean Mimbs led the Rams in receiving yards for the second time in as many games at Saskatchewan, catching 4 passes for 83 yards against the Huskies. Through two games, Mimbs has 10 catches for 175 yards. He's fourth in Canada West and 11th in all of U SPORTS in receiving yards, and is now only 151 receiving yards away from hitting the 1000 mark for his career.
TURNOVERS: The Rams forced their first two turnovers of the year last week at Saskatchewan. SB
Michael Eagle Bear jarred the ball loose on a Saskatchewan punt return in the second quarter which DB
Carson Sombach recovered, and DB
Jackson Sombach secured a fourth-quarter interception for the Rams' first pick of the season.
CAREER WATCH: SB
Bennett Stusek had 5 catches for 50 yards in last week's game, giving him 110 receptions and 1655 yards in 30 career Canada West games with the Rams. He needs his exact totals from last week - 5 more catches and 50 more receiving yards - to move into the U of R's all-time top 10 in both categories.Â
KATENDE OUT: The Rams lost RB
Christian Katende for the season after being injured just before halftime in Week 2. They're likely to continue to utilize both RB
Marshall Erichsen and RB
Olivier Savard, and RB
Jevon Garwood will draw back into the lineup on Saturday along with RB
Bryce Welter. Welter will dress for his second career game and his first as a running back, as his only other game played was back in the U of R's final game of 2021 as an emergency starter at quarterback.
SIX-MAN ROOTS: With Welter in the lineup, the Rams are likely to dress six players that played six-man football in high school. Welter was a quarterback for the Viscount Vikings, and OL
Connor Klassen (Big River Highway 55s), DB
Justin Mckerracher (Churchill Chargers), LB
Ryan Mills (Robert Southey Screaming Eagles), DL
Brad Rodin (Our Lady of Mount Pleasant Royals), and SB
Rylan Sokul (Wynyard Bears) are the others. Mckerracher played both six-man and nine-man football in high school, as Churchill transitioned to the nine-man game starting with his Grade 11 season.
RAMS/DINOS SERIES: The Rams have won all three games between the two teams since COVID, including a 34-21 victory on Oct. 2, 2021 over a No. 1-ranked Calgary squad in a game which also went down as head coach
Mark McConkey's first win. Â The Rams won both meetings last season, taking a 32-24 home victory in Week 2 and a 30-7 road win in Week 7. Saturday's game will be the 33nd time the two teams have met in Canada West play. Calgary holds a 22-10 advantage entering the contest.
DRAFT REPORT: Mimbs, LB
Cameron Mah, and DB
Jackson Sombach all participated in the U SPORTS East-West Bowl earlier this year, a showcase which features (for the most part) players available for selection in the 2024 CFL Draft. Galvan, OL
Matthew Hajewich, injured DB
Gowrishan Aravinthan, and QB
Bryden O'Flaherty are also eligible.
GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY: The Rams will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1973 team which won the Canadian junior football title. That squad defeated the Saskatoon Hilltops in the league final, the Vancouver Meralomas in the western semifinal, the Edmonton Huskies in the western final, and finally the Ottawa Sooners in the national championship game. Gord Currie was the head coach of that Rams team.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: The Rams have 99 players on this year's roster, including 70 who call Saskatchewan home. The team also has 15 players from Alberta, 9 from British Columbia, 2 from Manitoba, 1 from Ontario (
Dolani Robinson), 1 from Quebec (
Olivier Savard), and 1 from Mexico (Galvan).
